Wood Fence – Cap and Rail

Typically, a wood fence is a dog eared privacy, or picket style fence. Sometimes, homeowners are looking for something different to define their property with a wooden fence.

I generally enjoy these projects more than a typical wood fence. Even though it may take more time to estimate, design and install, the end product gives the ultimate in contractor/customer satisfaction.

Cap and Railed:

A wood cap and railed fence is a simple, yet appeasing upgrade to your fence that helps to define the top of the wood fence. It is a simple add on to the fence, and doesn’t require much additional materials or labor.

On the inside of the fence, the top rail (2×4) is pushed all the way to the top of the pickets and nailed to the posts. For the front, which is where this fence design is showcased, a 1×4 is nailed to the top face of the fence , and a 2×6 or 2×4 is “capped” on top. This design covers up the dog eared pickets and makes a nice accent on the top of the fence.

Pricing:

Typically, this type of custom wood fence can be purchased/installed for $15-$20 per foot. Pricing for wood fences may vary depending on your area and type of lumber being used.
